20 Horrific facts about the 9/11 attacks
The 9/11 attack was one of the known events in the world history. Its impacts have been felt by many people for many years. The 9/11 attacks did not only kill many people's lives but it also affected the many parts of the world economically. Below is the list of the horrific facts about the 9/11 attacks.
1. On September 11, 2001, almost 3,000 people were killed. Among those people were 400 firefighters and police officers. The terrorist attack happened at the World Trade Center located in NYC, in a plane crash in Shanksville, PA and at the Pentagon building in Washington, DC.
2. The recovery clean-up for the 1.8 million tons of damaged properties took nine months.
3. Passengers in the plane that crashed in Shanksville, PA tried to take the control of the plane from the hijackers but the result was not good. The hijackers purposely crashed the plane in Pennsylvania.
4. The video for the attack in the World Trade Center was immediately released after the attack but the footage for the attack in Pentagon was only publicly released in 2006.
5. The total number of children who lost their parents in the 9/11 attacks was 3,051. Seventeen newly born babies lost their fathers during the attack. And 11 unborn babies died.
6. The 9/11 attack in the World Trade Center was the event that killed the largest number of lives in America.
7. Researchers found that the total alcohol consumption reported in Manhattan a week after the attack greatly increased by 25 percent compared to the same week the year before. Also, the consumption of marijuana increased by 3.2 percent while the consumption of tobacco rose by 10 percent and the synagogue and church attendance rose by 20 percent after the 9/11 attacks.
8. The total amount of art lost after the collapse of the Twin Towers exceeded $100 million. The items that were damaged include the WTC Stabile sculpture of Amexander Calder, the epic World Trade Center tapestry of Joan Miro, painting of Entablature series by Roy Lichtenstein and the art works of David Hockney and Picasso.
9. There were only 291 dead bodies that were recovered from Ground Zero. Parents of Lisa Anne Frost, one of the passengers in the United Flight 175 which hit a tower, waited for one year before the workers who were sifting through debris found a belonging of their daughter.
10. It was discovered that three hours before the 9/11 attacks there was a machine called Random Event Generator that predicted that a cataclysmic event was about to happen.
11. The part of the Pentagon that was hit by Flight 77 had undergone a rearmament worth $258 million just before the 9/11 attacks. The walls that were strengthened and the windows that were reinforced during the rearmament were greatly damaged. There were only some parts of the Pentagon that remained intact.
12. The North American Aerospace Defense Command or NORAD which is said to be responsible in defending the US airspace simulated plane hijackings a week before the 9/11 attacks during their exercise called "Vigilant Guardian." The next exercise of NORAD was scheduled to begin in the morning of the attacks.
13. Larry Silverstein, a property developer bought a 99-year lease on WTC for $3.2 billion six months before the 9/11 attacks.
14. Reports discovered that five hijackers in the 9/11 attacks just stayed in a motel which was just located outside the National Security Agency during the days before the attacks.
15. The total cost of cleaning the damage created by the 9/11 attacks was estimated to be at $750 million.
16. The first use of the name nine-eleven or 9/11 was made by the New York times when they published an article with the title "America's Emergency Line: 9/11."
17. 911 became the emergency phone number in America after the 9/11 attacks.
18. The 9/11 attack is the second terrorist attack in the World Trade Center. The first terrorist attack was on the month of February in 1993 which killed six people.
19. Respiratory disorders such as lung inflammation and asthma developed at an abnormal rate after the 9/11 attack in the World Trade Center. Also, scientists discovered during the three-day flight ban over in the United States that the 9/11 attacks greatly affected the atmosphere in America. Their studies stated that the days became warmer and the nights became a little cooler after the 9/11 attacks.
20. Cantor Fitzgerald, a global financial service firm, was the business that was greatly affected by the attacks. The New York headquarters of the firm that were located on the 101st and 105th floors of the World Trade Center lost its 658 strong workforce out of the total 960 strong workforce.
Indeed, the 9/11 attacks caused great damage to America. After the 9/11 attacks, the United States put more strength to its security so that the probability of the occurrence of an event like that can be prevented.
